Karen, Quilting and A Quality Arrangement
Karen came to me for assistance with her previous kitchen which we were able to update from timber doors falling off to generous slick storage and plentiful crisp white benching before it was sold and they were ready for the next adventure. The home they bought was a very old property that needed truck loads of TLC! It was basically four rooms with a lean-to off the back which may not survive the next high wind!
Again, Karen required assistance with designing the kitchen. As it is in the center of the house and is open to a large family area choices of materials was important for aesthetics. The stunning choice of tiles and appliances and the open layout has come up not only looking a treat but now functions brilliantly in the production of some amazing and delicious treats too.

The fact that Karen left the house plan with me was very fortuitous. Now: Karen and her family have a lovely diverse social circle. They relish entertaining and are comfortable with hosting large gatherings. She and her friends also enjoy quilting. I have a small idea of the store and work space required for sewing materials and accoutrements. I also appreciate that having a place to leave sewing as is until the next opportunity to spend time at it is invaluable. There was nowhere large enough for quilting storage, but most unbelievably there was no where to use a sewing machine or spread work out. No where in the home specifically for friends to join Karen in a day of sewing!
So I had to play! When I suggested I see Karen again, I think she was mystified as we had completed the kitchen. Looking at my plan she said “Where did you find the extra room, Margot?” Actually this plan is smaller but it is much better arranged with privacy for en-suite and robe tucked into back corner. The laundry is part of the quilting room with access to courtyard garden, garage, living room and just across from the kitchen. Flexibility in the plan allows for one open space or closing off for folk's separate activities.
It is now called, rather pretentiously “The Margot Wing”! I am very proud to have created a space that is tailored for them. My favoured reward is the enjoyment that Karen, family and friends have in using the space today and forever.
I hope that given the opportunity to look over plans, I can exercise my passion and skill to create wonderful, functional, personalised, sensitive extension and/or renovation. No need for wasted materials, time, labour and angst on inferior nonfunctional layouts.
