Renovation for resale
Should you do things differently if the home is destined to be on the market very soon? Maybe there is a different level of finish but the layout is not very flexible so.....
This large family lived with this ridiculously tiny kitchen that had every problem under the sun. Firstly it was so dark. Not just that the interior walls were dark coloured bricks but the doors were timber: those that were still on their hinges! Also the bench top laminate was dark. But then you could not actually see much of what little bench top there was because it was always covered in appliances, large bowls, all sorts of the paraphernalia that went to creating beautiful food! How nutritious, delicious meals were produced is a total mystery but it was a kitchen from which delicious foods always emerged! There was no pantry, of the appliances that where present some worked but not major things: like the oven had been cold for years. The U shape of the space lead to two corner cupboards useless for storage as it was impossible to get into them. |
The other thing that I noticed first up was the disproportion between the tiny kitchen and the enormous room in which it too a meager corner. To suit the four bedroom home and the size of the families who descended, it could have been four times larger and still just coped.
It had to go!
And when it did a space within the house was found. Four brick walls, each one meter long, in the middle of the house! Very strange! Very quickly the floor was filled in, plaster added and bingo there was the pantry! Next the design needed to include an island bench so movement about the room was possible. Appliances added and with the light bright finishes chosen the resulting space is wonderful. A practical, functional multi person kitchen that proved to be up to the task of the copious quantity of delicious foods of previous times but created with ease, help, space and joy!
